Common composting methods
The municipal program collects food scraps
Pros:
- It works when you don’t want to or can’t compost in your yard
Cons:
- Need a small compost bin for indoors. A good one will keep the smell in and the bugs out, but there is smell when you open.
- Need to wait till weekly collection time of the municipal program or trash company. The smell is terrible when you dump your compost.
Set up a compost file in your yard
Pros:
- You get use the compost turned organic fertilizer
Cons:
- Still need a small counter top compost container or bin
- May use a large compost bin or composter system outdoor
- Need to layer brown and green materials
- Need to keep the compost moist
- Need to periodically mix or turn the compost
- Need to scoop the compost out of the pile when ready
- It can easily smell bad if you don’t maintain the compost well
- Flies
- Bad aesthetics in the garden
Electric kitchen heating composter or foodcycler
Pros:
- Good for small homes with indoor planters but no outdoor garden
- Quiet and odorless
Cons:
- The high temperature of the composter diminishes nutrients
- Higher cost of appliance and electricity
- It takes significant counter space
An efficient clean composting method
This compost pesto method works amazingly well when you have some soil in your garden or yard. I develop this efficient approach because I couldn’t stand the inconvenience, bad smell and fruit flies of the common composting methods. It’s easy so I sustain doing so for years.

The compost pesto method
Pros:
- It does not smell at any time point. Or it smells delicious.
- No need to purchase any countertop or outdoor compost bin
- Minimal effort or time needed
- You get use the compost turned organic fertilizer
Cons:
- May take up some space in the fridge or freezer
Step 1: Collect
- You need tupperware for your food scraps. Collect and put away in the fridge after each food prep.
- You can store or transfer the tupperware of food scraps to the freezer it takes a long time to fill up or it takes a long time to proceed to step 2.
- Fruits, veggies and egg shells are great. Animal protein is better limited. No large hard fruit pits if you don’t have a powerful blender.
Step 2: Blend
- Use a blender. Add food scraps and enough water to blend to a pesto or thick smoothie consistency.
- The best timing to blend is to do it after you just use your blender for smoothie or other food, so no extra blender jar cleaning is needed.
Step 3: Mix with soil
- Mix the compost pesto into the soil in your yard till it looks like soil. It takes about a minute or two for each batch.
- You are done! It does not smell.
